Ascension Poem

The Last Whimsy
by Travis Brown

Twas the night of Ascension and from Paris to Perth,
No Source-seed was stirring any place on the earth;
The fearful they shivered, the ugly they hid,
In hopes to resist what the cosmos just did.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of Planet A danced in their heads.
With Georgi just going, and I on the way,
I laughed as I pulsed in a curious way.

Then out from the void there arose such a clatter,
I flew from the bed, dissolved of all matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
I flew through the shutters, I flew through the sash.

The moon and the sun turning right round,
Planet B’s people all sank to the ground.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But George and the rest of us whooping a cheer.

With the Universe trumpeting and the season opened,
I knew in a moment it must be the end.
More rapid than eagles, the first wave we flew,
We whistled, and shouted, and called out to You:

‘Wake up now, wake up now, wake up now we say,
It’s time to begin a new marvelous day.
From the base of your spine to the top of your head,
the light is free-flowing; wake up from the dead!’
